ആ കൂട്ടക്കൊലയെക്കുറിച്ച് ഏതാനും കൊല്ലം മുമ്പ് പുറത്തു വന്ന ലീനാ മോറെയുടെ ‘English East India Company and the Local Rulers in Kerala’ എന്ന പുസ്തകം നൽകുന്ന വിവരം Calicut Heritage ബ്ലോഗിൽ കാണാവുന്നതാണ്.

CHF has scanned all available works of history dealing with that period and fail to locate any reference to such reprisal. Leena More has not mentioned about it because such an event did not take place. On the contrary, the English were so powerless to take revenge (as anticipated by the people of Attingal) that they were rendered contemptible in the eyes of the locals. All their forces were tied up in their battle against the Angrias of the Maratha country. In September 1722, the Queen entered into a treaty with Alexander Orme, the Agent of Anjengo which provided that the ring leaders in the attack on Gyfford should be punished and their estates confiscated, and that the Queen would compensate the Company for all losses. The treaty was witnessed by the Queen's brother, the King of Quilon. The reprisal (if one could call it thus)was led by Marthanda Varma in 1729 with the assistance of troops from the Nayaks of Madurai and it ended in annihilating the Ettuveettil Pillais.
All this is beyond the purview of the CHF investigation which aims to draw attention to the wanton destruction of our heritage and the Government's inability to preserve these. Attingal Palace is important to us because it was the venue of one of the earliest bloody revolts against the British presence in India. While CHF will not take sides, it feels that it has a duty to portray facts and not be swayed by jingoistic sentiments.
