The well-known story of Prince Siddhartha’s renunciation and his subsequent enlightenment is charmingly retold by Thich Nhat Hanh in this biography. A Buddhist monk whose peace efforts during the Vietnam war earned for him earned the wrath of the regimes in both the north and the south, Thich has been living in exile since 1966. As a student at Princeton and a teacher at Columbia University, he had the opportunity to familiarise himself with Western thought. A prolific writer on Buddhist ideals, he is an exponent of the concept of “mindful living”.

A scholar in Pali, Sanskrit and Chinese, and he has drawn material from ancient texts in these languages. The book covers the Buddha’s life from his birth to the period immediately after enlightenment. While the material has been arranged skillfully, the narrative has a lyrical touch. The story is told from two different standpoints: that of Svasti, a boy who had met Siddhartha while tending buffaloes, and the Buddha himself.

It was to Svasti and Sujatha (the village chieftain’s daughter) that the Buddha first talked about his experience under the Bodhi tree. The author provides many sidelights which enhance the reader’s understanding of the Buddha’s life and mission.– The Hindu, March 23, 2010.
